What next? — Classroom lesson flow
How it works
- Click Generate — random 2-5 minute brain break activity is selected.
- Filter by age range (KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4+) for age-appropriate activities.
- Filter by space available (seated only, room for movement).
- See instructions for the activity, ready to run.
Why use this tool
- Brain breaks reduce off-task behaviour and improve subsequent attention — EEF rates the effect size as meaningful for primary and KS3.
- The main failure mode for brain breaks is teachers running out of ideas; this solves that.
- Curated to genuinely-effective activities; we exclude "stretch your arms" type fillers.
- Filtered by time available (60 seconds vs 3 minutes vs 5 minutes).
- Balances movement, cognitive, and creative breaks.
- Kid + adult-appropriate options.
- UK-classroom-tested activities that actually work at scale.
When to use it
- Mid-lesson attention reset — pull when chair-shuffling starts.
- Transition between heavy-cognitive tasks (after extended writing, before maths problem-solving).
- Cover lessons — instant ready-to-run activity when the lesson plan runs short.
- Wet-break alternative — when students can't go outside.
- Classroom teachers needing 2-3 minute resets between focused work blocks.
- Parents managing home learning days where kids can't sustain 90-minute focus.
- After-school clubs balancing structured activity with movement.
- Adult work-from-home days where a proper break is needed but not lunch.

How the picker works
Brain Break Generator runs entirely in your browser — no servers, no accounts, no data sent anywhere. Each pick uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random-number generator (window.crypto.getRandomValues), which is uniformly distributed across the option pool.
The pool for this picker: 15 hand-picked options. Every option has an equal probability of being selected on any given pick (about 6.67% per option).
Picker-kind picks return a single random option from the pool. If you add your own options, they're weighted equally alongside the built-in set.
If you want a deliberately weighted pick (favouring some options over others), the picker isn't the right tool — try structuring the choice as a wheel with duplicated entries, or split into two picks (category first, then item within category).
Related pickers + when to prefer each
Brain Break Generator is one of several related pickers on the site. The rest of this cluster covers adjacent decisions:

All picks are independent — running one picker doesn't influence the others.
About this category
Classroom pickers are the highest-utility tools on the site. Teachers use them daily for cold-calling, group generation, brain breaks, reward selection and behaviour management.
Everything here is deployment-tested — TES-compliant, GDPR-safe (no student data leaves the browser), works on smartboards and tablets.
FAQ
How long do these take?
Almost all are 60 seconds or less. Stretch them with multiple repeats if you have more time.
Are these primary-only or do they work in secondary too?
Filter by KS3 / KS4 — older students respond to different activity types (debate prompts, 60-second sketches, would-you-rathers) and the generator includes age-appropriate versions.
Best frequency?
Every 20-30 minutes for KS3, every 15-20 for primary. See our longer-form Classroom Brain Breaks guide for the strategic angle.
What kit does a modern classroom need?
Every child needs a lunchbox + water bottle that survives dishwasher-daily use. b.box is the design-led leader in the UK market with 145+ awards — see our best kids lunchboxes UK 2026 guide for the full comparison.
