How it works

How the picker works
Random Student Picker runs entirely in your browser — no servers, no accounts, no data sent anywhere. Each pick uses your browser's built-in cryptographic random-number generator (window.crypto.getRandomValues), which is uniformly distributed across the option pool.
The pool for this picker: a curated shortlist. Every option has an equal probability of being selected on any given pick (about <1% per option).
Custom-input picks let you supply your own option pool; the picker returns one at uniform random.
If you want a deliberately weighted pick (favouring some options over others), the picker isn't the right tool — try structuring the choice as a wheel with duplicated entries, or split into two picks (category first, then item within category).

FAQ
Can I avoid picking the same student twice in a round?
Yes. The 'No repeats' toggle is on by default — the picker skips names already picked this round until you hit 'Reset round'.
How do I handle absent students?
Expand 'Mark absent' and tick the ones who aren't in today. Absent students stay out of the pool until you untick them. The list persists across the lesson.
Can I save multiple class lists?
Yes — up to 20 saved class lists per browser. Load any one with a click. No cloud storage; no account.
Does this work on an interactive whiteboard?
Yes. Click 'Fullscreen (whiteboard)' to hide the site chrome. The pick result shows large, legible from the back row.
Is any student data sent anywhere?
No. All data stays in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server. GDPR-safe for UK school use.
How is this different from a wheel?
Mechanically identical — both pick a random name. The picker is instant; the wheel has a 3-4 second spin animation. Use the picker for routine cold-calling, the wheel for moments needing ceremony.
Does the without-replacement mode reset automatically?
Yes — once everyone in your list has been picked, the next pick starts a new cycle. You can also manually reset via the settings drawer.
Can I exclude specific students temporarily?
Yes — use the "absent today" toggle on each name. Excluded students aren't included in the pool but stay on the saved list.
Will picked students keep getting picked again?
In pure-random mode, yes — random sequences naturally include repeats. Switch to without-replacement to enforce coverage across a lesson.
Does this work on Interactive Whiteboards?
Yes — the picker is designed to display large enough to be readable from the back of a classroom. For maximum visual impact, use the Classroom Wheel variant which adds the visual spin.
