How it works

  • Paste your class list into the textarea, one name per line.
  • Hit "Pick a student" — a random name is selected and displayed.
  • Switch to "Without replacement" mode for full-class coverage — names don't repeat until everyone's been picked.
  • Save your class list via the URL bookmark; it persists across sessions.
  • Use the "Weighted" toggle to give certain names higher / lower probability.

Why use this tool

  • Cold-call random questioning is one of the highest-impact-per-effort teaching interventions per EEF research.
  • Eliminates the "hands up" lottery where the same 4-6 students dominate every lesson.
  • When every student knows they might be picked, all attention recalibrates upward — measurable 20-40% engagement lift.
  • Defuses the "why did you pick me?" objection — the algorithm picked, not the teacher.
  • Save 5-8 minutes per lesson otherwise spent on teacher-led name calling.

When to use it

  • Cold-call retrieval practice — pose question, 5 seconds silent think, pick a name, share.
  • Plenary / exit-ticket random sampling — pick 5 names to check work for class-wide signal.
  • Group formation — pick captains, captains then pick teammates alternately.
  • Lining up / classroom transitions — random "who goes first" removes daily favouritism.
  • Reading roles — random allocation of paragraphs / characters in shared reading.
  • Praise random allocation — pair the picker with positive recognition rounds.
  • Volunteer-skipping — picker overrides "always the same 3 students put their hand up."

FAQ

Where is my class list saved?

In your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing browser data resets the list.

Can I weight the list so quieter students come up more?

Not in this version — every name has equal chance per tap. Adding/removing names manually achieves the same result.

How is this different from a wheel?

Mechanically identical — both pick a random name. The picker is instant; the wheel has a 3-4 second spin animation. Use the picker for routine cold-calling, the wheel for moments needing ceremony.

Does the without-replacement mode reset automatically?

Yes — once everyone in your list has been picked, the next pick starts a new cycle. You can also manually reset via the settings drawer.

Can I exclude specific students temporarily?

Yes — use the "absent today" toggle on each name. Excluded students aren't included in the pool but stay on the saved list.

Will picked students keep getting picked again?

In pure-random mode, yes — random sequences naturally include repeats. Switch to without-replacement to enforce coverage across a lesson.

Does this work on Interactive Whiteboards?

Yes — the picker is designed to display large enough to be readable from the back of a classroom. For maximum visual impact, use the Classroom Wheel variant which adds the visual spin.
