How to run truth or dare properly
The classic version breaks down in adult company because the prompt-generation is the friction — someone has to invent the truth or dare, they hesitate, momentum dies. A generator fixes this by making the prompt come from an external source, not a player, so the game flows uninterrupted.
Optimal format: nominated player taps the button, reads the result, chooses truth or dare, answers or performs. Passing counts as forfeiting a small penalty (drink, do 10 push-ups, sing a chorus). Rotate every round.
The three modes
Party mode (mixed): works for mixed friend groups of adults, family gatherings once the kids are in bed, work drinks (with judgment). Nothing crude enough to be genuinely embarrassing; nothing so tame it kills the vibe. Best middle ground.
Couples mode: written for romantic partners specifically. Prompts assume intimacy + trust that don't exist in casual friendship. Great for date-night formats and long-term couples looking to reconnect. Avoid in mixed groups.
Friends mode: written for close friendship groups, higher-embarrassment tolerance, more inside-joke energy. Best for house parties with people you've known 5+ years. Not appropriate for family gatherings or new acquaintances.
Setting expectations before you start
The single biggest cause of truth-or-dare going wrong: mismatched consent levels. Agree upfront:
- Anyone can pass any prompt, no explanation needed. Passing costs a small forfeit but doesn't require justification.
- Certain topics are off-limits — agree these before starting. Common exclusions: work performance issues, family bereavements, ex-partners, health conditions.
- Physical dares must be safe. Nothing that could genuinely injure someone, nothing outside the property, nothing involving strangers without consent.
- Photos + recordings require unanimous consent. If anyone says no, no recordings this session.
Adult vs family mode
The current generator is designed for adult groups. A family-friendly mode with age-appropriate prompts is planned. In the meantime, for family game night, use the Friends mode + re-roll aggressively — the more physical dares tend to work fine with mixed ages; skip the intimacy-heavy prompts.
Drinking-game variants
Common drinking-game adaptation: pass = drink 2, complete a dare = give out 3 drinks, truth answered = give out 1 drink. Adjust to preference. Never mandatory — passing without drinking is always OK.

When the game isn't working
Truth or dare has diminishing returns after about 20-25 minutes in most groups. Signs the game has run its course: (1) prompts start feeling repetitive to the group, (2) people are passing more than answering, (3) the mood has genuinely shifted from playful to awkward. Rotate to a different party game before you push through the fun-drain.
Good rotations: charades, "would you rather" chains (use /random-date-night-generator couples questions for adult versions), music-related party games, group cocktail-making.

Is this suitable for all ages?
Adult-friendly by default. Party mode is the safest for mixed company. Couples and Friends modes assume adult-only groups.

Can I use this for a hen or stag do?
Yes — Friends mode is the closest to hen/stag energy. Add a house rule about which topics are off-limits before you start.

Pass, take the agreed forfeit, move on. The game only works if everyone knows they can pass without justification.
