The "no, you decide" problem

Long-term couples have a specific decision-loop failure: both parties trying to be accommodating produces "no, you decide", "no, you decide", stalemate, Domino's + Netflix by default. Not because you don't want to do something more interesting — because the pick itself has become the friction.

A random generator externalises the decision. Neither of you has to advocate for a specific pick, so neither has to defend it. You get the pick, you commit, you go. The relationship gets a break from the constant micro-negotiation of joint decision-making.

How the three modes work

Any night: the broad pool — mix of out-of-house dates, at-home activities, adventure prompts, quiet evenings. Best for the "let's just do something" mood.

At home: zero-cost or low-cost ideas that work in the flat / house. Cook something new together, play a specific game, do a structured question night, learn a small skill. Best for weeknights, budget-conscious phases, tired evenings.

Deep questions: conversation prompts calibrated for adult couples. Not tell-me-your-childhood generic — questions actually designed to surface something new about your partner. Best for anniversaries, long weekend mornings, post-argument reconnection.

Date-night stages

New relationship (0-6 months): use the Any-night mode with a light bias toward out-of-house activities. You're still building shared experiences; the pool prompts help you discover what you both actually enjoy.

Established (6 months - 2 years): mix modes. At-home for weeknight consistency, Any-night for weekends, Deep-questions occasionally to break the routine and go deeper.

Long-term (2+ years): the Deep-questions mode becomes proportionally more valuable. You know the activities; what compounds now is depth of understanding. Use once every few weeks.

Parents with kids: the At-home mode is your friend. Kid-in-bed evenings tend to be short — a structured 45-minute at-home pick beats "we should've gone out for dinner" recriminations.

Budget vs money-no-object

The pool includes both. Every pick has a rough cost tier baked in (implicit — not shown). About 40% of the pool is £0-£10 activities (at-home focused); 40% is £20-£60 (typical restaurant, cinema, small activity); 20% is £60+ (special-occasion picks). Re-roll if the cost tier doesn't match tonight's budget.

Reconnection use cases

After an argument, after a stressful work period, after a long stretch of parenting-only mode with no adult time — the Deep-questions mode specifically helps re-establish adult connection. Not therapy, not a fix for real relationship issues, but a structured way to remember that you actually like each other.

Anniversary use: pick two Any-night prompts, commit to doing both across the weekend. Novelty compounds — an anniversary weekend that has structure to it outperforms one that's "we'll figure out something".

What the generator can't do

Won't book restaurants for you (use OpenTable / TheFork). Won't know your local area or postcode. Won't consider budget explicitly (re-roll if the pick is out of budget). Won't remember your previous picks (no login = no history). Won't generate genuinely awful ideas — the pool is curated — but occasional mismatches with your specific taste are expected. Re-roll.

FAQ

Are the ideas UK-specific?

The pool assumes UK context — pub culture, UK restaurants, UK activities. About 70% of picks work equally in other English-speaking countries.

How is this different from a date-idea app?

No signup, no location tracking, no data collection. Works instantly on any device. Apps typically want your postcode + partner details.

Can I use this if we're not officially "a couple"?

Yes — Any-night and Deep-questions modes work equally well for people-getting-to-know-each-other. Skip the At-home mode until you're at that stage.

What about anniversaries + special occasions?

Use Any-night with a light re-roll bias toward higher-effort picks. For serious milestone dates (10+ year anniversaries), the generator is a starting point, not the whole plan.

Can I filter by cost or duration?

Not directly — the pool mixes cost tiers. Re-roll if a pick is out of tonight's budget or time available. Explicit cost + duration filters are on the roadmap.
