Picking one is a measurable cognitive problem: studies (the original "jam study" applied to streaming) show that more options reduce satisfaction with the eventual pick. People spend 18-23 minutes deciding what to watch on a typical Saturday night.

Random movie pickers solve the problem brute-force: they remove the choice. The mechanism that makes random pickers feel good (rather than abdicating decision-making) is the limited set: a hand-curated list of 200-500 quality titles, not the full 12,000. Curated randomness > true randomness.

The two structural ways to use a movie picker:

• Mood-led: "I want a comedy" / "I want something dark." Use a genre-specific picker. Lower friction, narrower options.
• Service-led: "I have Disney+ and that's it tonight." Use a service-specific picker. Removes the "but it's not on Netflix" problem.

The hardest movie pick is the multi-person one — 4 people, 4 sets of preferences, 90 minutes of arguing. The structural fix: don't vote on the pick, vote on the constraints.

1. Everyone names one genre they'd enjoy. (Action, comedy, family, etc.)
2. Everyone names one constraint (under 2 hours, no horror, must be rated PG, on a service we have).
3. Plug into the Family Movie Generator or Movie Night Wheel.
4. Whatever it picks, you watch. No re-rolls.

The "no re-rolls" rule is the critical bit. Re-rolls undermine the entire mechanism — you're back to choosing. The constraint of "we picked this method, we honour the result" is what fixes the indecision spiral.
